After a munition explodes, identifiable remnants can be found. These remnants can help identify the type of munition (e.g. 155mm artillery projectile) or even the specific munition (e.g. M825A1 artillery projectile).
Identifications such as this can identify perpetrators of an attack, or reveal the origin of munitions being used in a conflict zone.
Parts of a munition that are of sturdier construction, and more distant to the explosive filler, are more likely to remain intact.
